The executive director of the Sarnia-Lambton Sexual Assault Survivors' Centre welcomes Tuesday's sentencing of comedian Bill Cosby.
Michelle Batty said the sentence of three to 10 years in state prison shows that the criminal justice system believed the survivors.
"The whole #MeToo movement has given survivors more courage to come forward for those who want to do that," said Batty. "Disclosing publicly is certainly not something that every survivor would want to do. I think our numbers are certainly growing, and more people are talking about it and it's a good thing."
Batty says it's important that there are cases where people see that justice does happen.
The 81-year-old Cosby was sentenced for drugging and molesting Canadian Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia home.
About 60 women, including Constand, have accused the entertainer of sexual misconduct.
Prosecutors were looking for a sentence of five to 10 years, while the defence had asked for house arrest.
There was no statement from Cosby in court.
