Multiple factors lead to relief at the pumps

Sarnia residents are now getting some relief at the pumps after prices soared over the summer.

The cost of regular gasoline had dropped below $1.10 per litre as of Monday afternoon, although some stations were back up by Tuesday morning around $1.25 per litre.

That's welcome news after prices routinely peaked at $1.34 over the summer.

Gasbuddy.com Senior Analyst Dan McTeague said there are a couple of factors that have led to lower prices.

"Obviously, the first one was the five-cent decrease in the cap and trade tax that the Ontario government removed almost two weeks ago," said McTeague. "It's essentially trickled through to the pumps. We were then pleased to receive news last week that we had shifted from summer to winter blends of gasoline. That was a net four cent decrease plus tax."

McTeague said there's also a mini gas war, with many gas companies selling for below wholesale prices.

He uses about 60 litres per week and is now saving about $15 each time he fills up.

He encouraged everyone to get gas as soon as possible.

The price of crude oil was going up about $2 per barrel on Monday with concerns over changes to supply.
