French school board candidate terminates campaign

A candidate for French public school board trustee in the October municipal election is no longer in the running for the position.

Genevieve Smith terminated her candidacy after accepting a teaching job at a French public school that is governed by Conseil scolaire Viamonde.

Being employed as a teacher makes her ineligible to run as a trustee.

Sarnia City Clerk Diane Gould-Brown said under the Municipal Elections Act they're required to reopen nominations and hold a by-election if necessary.

"The nomination period is open, and it ends on October 15 at 2 p.m.," said Gould-Brown. "We can take nominations here at the city's clerk's department and then we would move into the election on the last week of November."

The by-election, if needed, will be held November 29.

If no one files nomination papers, incumbent Pierre Lambert will be acclaimed to the position for the area that includes Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Elgin, Haldimand, Norfolk and Oxford counties.

There are currently 323 voters in Sarnia-Lambton who can cast a ballot for the French public school board.

Those voters will still be required to vote in the October 22 election if they wish to cast ballots for other municipal positions including mayor and council.

Sarnia's internet/telephone voting period runs from Thursday, October 11 at 9 a.m. until Monday, October 22 at 8 p.m.
