A former Sarnia nurse who stole fentanyl from Bluewater Health has been handed a conditional sentence with house arrest.
David Cartwright appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice Wednesday morning.
The 33-year-old's 18-month conditional sentence includes nine months of house arrest, and an additional 18 months probation to follow.
Conditions imposed by the court include 100 hours of community service and no consumption of any intoxicating substances.
The Crown was seeking a nine-month jail sentence, while the defence argued an 18-month conditional sentence with house arrest was appropriate.
Justice Mark Hornblower made note of Cartwright's clear steps towards rehabilitation after the former surgical nurse pleaded guilty to stealing the opioid in April 2017.
After the ruling, Cartwright told Blackburn News Sarnia, that Hornblower's decision was fair.
Cartwright reiterated how he was happy he was caught, because he needed something to break the chain of his addiction to painkillers, and that he likely would’ve died if he wasn’t arrested.
