Council to consider optics of city bus cameras

It's hoped video surveillance cameras will be installed in all of Sarnia's city buses by the end of this year.

Council is being asked to accept a $167,000 proposal Monday to equip the fleet of 30 buses.

Manager of Development and Transportation David Jackson said they haven't had cameras on buses before and wanted to implement them to improve safety for passengers and their drivers.

"We have many incidents throughout the year of issues between passengers or interactions between our drivers and the passengers or even collisions that occur, where having some video footage to review would certainly help with the investigation of those incidents," said Jackson.

He said each bus will be outfitted with a number of cameras.

"Depending on the size of the bus, it varies. But there'll be numerous cameras inside the bus to make sure there's full coverage there and then there's also some cameras that are pointing outside of the bus that face traffic as well," said Jackson.

Jackson said the procurement is being handled by Metrolinx as a joint initiative with nine other transit operators for an estimated 445 vehicles.
