Hundreds Hauled To Shore In Annual Float Down (GALLERY)

Between 3,000 and 5,000 people took part in Sunday's unsanctioned Float Down on the St Clair River. Warm weather and just a light breeze kept almost all of those who went into the water on a variety of floatation devices on course.

Hundreds of people also got into the water in Point Edward.

The American and Canadian Coast Guards had to help 464 people, most of whom had their floats deflate.

The St. Clair County Sheriffs Department says 15 people had to be hauled out of the water needing medical attention, 10 of whom were released onshore and five who needed further care. They also say there were no arrests.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Service helped one young woman who was sick and brought her safely back to shore where she was seen by Lambton EMS.

Agencies on both sides of the border mounted a campaign prior to the event, urging participants to wear life jackets. They say increased use was evident.

To try to keep things safe, Transport Canada restricted all vessels from the river from 12pm until 8pm. At mid-afternoon, the Canadian Coast Guard says one motorized pleasure boat left Sarnia Bay and entered the restricted safety zone but was intercepted by RCMP and returned to shore.

At 7pm, authorities were clearing the water of participants prior to the river's reopening at 8pm.
