Gathering Of The Clans At Pinery

A four-day regional gathering of Anishinaabek clan families continues through the weekend at Pinery Provincial Park.

Organizer Eli George says elders of the Algonquin speaking family are hoping to teach young families more about who they are through a variety of workshops and feasts.

"I think the Pinery is a really good place for this because, in my family particularly, we have a really long line back to this whole area," says George.

"A lot of young people don't know where they come from, any Nation should be concerned with the future of their children because that is the future of the Nation."

George says it's hard to tell, but they're expecting about 200 people will gather to learn more about their traditional roles and responsibilities.

The Turtle and Fish Clan planned sunrise ceremonies Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Clan Grandmothers say the gathering is not a place for politics, division or individuals to overtake the newly restarted grassroots initiative.

Pinery representatives have asked that visitors be respectful of the ceremonial gathering.
