Therapeutic Pool Testing To Begin

Work continues on the two-phase project to repair and reopen the therapeutic pool at Pathway's Health Centre for Children.

The 140,000 litre, salt water pool used by over 11,000 swimmers each year, has been closed since late December due to a major leak.

Executive Director Jenny Greensmith says they're in the midst of phase one repairs, and testing of pumps and skimmers will take place this month once the new concrete is cured.

"Sometime this August we will begin to fill and we will begin the testing," says Greensmith. "I know that our pool supervisor and our pool manager are watching this very carefully. We want to make sure that when we open up to the community for registration, that it is tried, true and tested."

She says phase two will include the refurbishment of the 30-year-old pool to ensure it's able to stay open for another 30 years.

"Before the leak was discovered in December 2017, our board was already doing a lot of planning and some investigation to just see what it would take to refurbish the pool," says Greensmith. "That we know is going to require significant capital investment and a provision for ongoing maintenance."

So far, donations for the effort have raised about $100,000.

Greensmith says they plan to launch an official fundraising campaign by the new year.
