Happy Ending To Plaque Puzzle

The case of the missing plaque has been solved.

There were fears vandals had struck when the oval-shaped plaque went missing from the "Lest We Forget" memorial in Veterans Park on Wellington St. on Sunday.

Communities in Bloom spokesperson Anne Marie Gillis says it turned out that the extreme heat melted the silicone holding the plaque in place. It fell off, miraculously in one piece, and was picked up by a passer-by who when got in touch with the Sarnia Historical Society.

"The Gods were with us," says Gillis. "The sign fell onto the ground in one piece. And the fact that someone picked it up and gave it to Ron RealeSmith. It's a good news story in that perspective, that people have taken ownership of the sign and are looking after it. But it is also a precautionary tale to us with regard to extreme heat. Sometimes people don't always take notice of that. It was so hot on Sunday it caused silicone to melt. Wow!"

Now artist Dave Beatty will reattach the plaque using a substance that will hopefully adhere a little better.
