Dog Census Being Unleashed In Sarnia

Local dog owners looking to avoid a $150 fine will want to ensure their pooches are licensed with the city.

This summer, the City of Sarnia will be going door-to-door to conduct a dog census to make sure licenses are updated.

Supervisor of Bylaw Enforcement Adam MacDonald says licensing your dogs comes with numerous benefits.

"It lets people know that your dog has up to date rabies vaccinations, protecting you as well as the public if an incident occurs," says MacDonald. "If your dog goes missing, having a license drastically improves your chances of getting the dog back. Licensing fees also help support the efforts of the Humane Society with re-homing of dogs, ensuring they're spayed and neutered, and their shots are up to date prior to arriving with their new family."

A license is $62 for an altered dog and it's $110 for an unaltered dog. The fees were increased after the March 31 deadline.

They can be purchased at the customer service department at Sarnia City Hall, or at the Sarnia & District Humane Society.

The city requires dog licenses to be renewed every year.
