Numerous Charges Laid In Truck Blitz

The OPP stopped over 4,200 commercial vehicles and laid nearly 2,500 charges in a province-wide safe trucking blitz from July 15-21.

The provincial police force used aircraft, and non-traditional patrol vehicles in the blitz, that resulted in 114 distracted driving charges, 576 speeding charges, 75 tickets for following too close, and 269 issued for other moving violations.

As well, 214 charges were laid for defective equipment, and nearly 800 for improper documentation. 120 trucks were taken out of service for being unsafe.

The OPP say the drivers of a number of passenger vehicles were also caught up in the blitz, and charged with distracted driving and speeding.

Police say there were no truck-related fatalities during the week, and the majority of commercial vehicle drivers were operating their rigs in a safe manner.
