Port Huron Officer Saves Drowning Children

A Port Huron police cadet is being hailed as a hero for rescuing two young girls from drowning in the St. Clair River on Thursday.

Police say two girls, aged 9 and 13, were swimming at the foot of Griswold St. around 8pm when they were swept away by the current and could no longer touch the bottom.

Joseph Holzberger was working fireworks detail when he heard cries for help.

He swam out to the sandbar and was able to pull both children to safety.

The kids' parents were not there at the time but arrived shortly after. Child Protective Services were notified of the incident.

Police caution that the St. Clair River is a dangerous place to swim in without some kind of floatation device.
