B-25 'Maid In The Shade' In Sarnia

Aviation enthusiasts are in for a treat this week, as a historic military aircraft makes a stop in Sarnia.

The B-25 bomber Maid In The Shade was built in 1944 and flown during the Second World War.

The twin-engine, medium bomber flew 15 combat missions out of the Mediterranean island of Corsica.

It's credited with sinking eight ships and shooting down five planes during America's first large-scale bombing in the Philippines in 1944.

The Arizona Commemorative Airforce Museum's Mike Mueller says it's one of just 34 planes of its type still flying in the world, and only one of a few used in combat.

While Maid In The Shade was not specifically involved, the B-25 Mitchell is best known as the aircraft that was used in the famous Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942.

"They put 16 of these land-based bombers on a World War II aircraft carrier, and took them to within striking distance of Japan," says Mueller. "They took off from the carrier, flew to Japan and bombed targets on the main island and then flew on to China. All of them crash-landed, the crews either bailed out or crash-landed the aircraft. Only about ten of the 80 men there actually made it back from the mission."

Maid In The Shade is at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport from Wednesday, July 11 to July 15.

Tours of the bomber are taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2pm until 6pm, and Thursday from 9am until 6pm.

There's a chance to take a ride in the plane from Friday to Sunday between 10am and 1pm.

Tours cost $10 US and $20 US for a family of four. Rides are $325 US for a waist gunner compartment seat, and $650 US for a flight deck jump seat.

In conjunction with the B-25's visit, Pathways Health Centre For Children is holding a 1940's themed dinner and dance called the "Wings Over Sarnia" Gala on Friday, July 13.

It's taking place at 5:30pm in hangar two at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport, with proceeds benefiting Pathway's pool restoration fundraiser.

Fine dining and cocktails are on the buffet menu, along with a performance by the Toronto All-Star Big Band.

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by calling Pathways at 519-542-3471.

Last June's inaugural gala, in conjunction with a visit by the B-17 Flying Fortress Sentimental Journey, was a huge success.
