New Pedestrian Crossover At Canatara

A new pedestrian crossover at the entrance to Canatara Park at Christina St. and Cathcart Blvd. was installed June 26 in advance of Canada Day celebrations. A pedestrian crossover (PXO) is different from a crosswalk and is identified by specific signs, pavement markings and lights. Some have illuminated overhead lights and warning signs and pedestrian push buttons. City Director of Engineering Mike Berkvens says the PXO provides a safe location for pedestrians to access Canatara. "Staff have included additional lights at this PXO for extra visibility due to its location at an intersection and multi-turning lane road," says Berkvens. Pedestrians are directed to push the button to activate the flashing lights, and make sure the driver can see them and has come to a complete stop, before beginning to cross. By law, drivers must stop and yield to pedestrians intending to cross, and wait for them to cross the intersection completely before proceeding.
