Petrolia's longtime mayor says he won't be seeking re-election when voters head to the polls in October.
John McCharles has spent the past 12 years as mayor, and was on town council for 16 years before that.
He says he's getting older, and embarking on another four-year term isn't in the cards.
"I'm going to certainly miss it because it's been in my blood for over 30 years, and sort of every day has something to do with the town or the county," says McCharles.
McCharles says controversies over the past two years, including former CAO Manny Baron being charged with breach of trust, didn't factor into his decision.
Baron was placed on administrative leave in October after The Independent reported that the town was being charged rent, and utilities in lieu of rent on facilities he allegedly owned through a numbered company.
"There are always a few bumps in the road when you're in politics, and I've been able to live through those bumps," says McCharles. "I think that there's hardly any council that goes unscathed. But, that wasn't any part of my decision. My decision was more about the length of the term, my age, and being able to spend more time with family."
He notes Petrolia's net worth has increased by about 80% over the past nine years.
The town is now worth about $90-million, spurred on by infrastructure improvements made possible by grants from senior government.
He's also pleased with the addition of the Central Lambton Family Health Team facility, which has been a great asset to county residents.
McCharles says he plans to spend more time with his family and has some business interests that he will be pursuing.
