Lambton College Hosts Firefit Challenge

Some of the best firefighters from across the region will be competing at Lambton College this weekend.

The college is hosting the Western Ontario Regional Scott Firefit Championships for the first time in its history.

Head Coach Sue Patrick says their team is a bit more inexperienced this year, but should still perform well.

The competition features individual and relay events that simulate everything a firefighter would do on the job.

"We do have a lot of rookies again," says Patrick. "So, we have two returning members and about 10 or 11 rookie competitors. They're going to be facing the challenge against the best firefighters on both Saturday and Sunday and getting their feet wet. This will be good to be at home, in front of hopefully some good support from the community."

Patrick says two alumni will be returning to compete. Oakville firefighter Ian Van Reenen, and Dr. Oz Show trainer Amber Bowman will be at the event.

Lambton's team has been competing in firefit for 19 years and has had a lot of recent success.

At the 2016 event in Pt. Elgin, Captain Courtney Surridge and MacKenzie Baker set a Canadian women's college record in the tandem event with a time of 2:30.

The relay team won gold at the 2017 Canadian championships and advanced to compete for the world crown.

The competition runs June 22 to June 24 at the college's main campus, and will feature lots of hands-on activities for the kids.
