Mayor Renews Call For Pot Pardons

Sarnia's mayor has renewed his call for criminal records for minor pot possession to be expunged when marijuana is legalized this fall.

Mike Bradley has sent another letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking him to consider the change.

"I'm reminding the prime minister what goes hand and glove with the decriminalization, should be pardons for those people who had simple possession charges going back decades," says Bradley. "There are tens of thousands of Canadians in that position."

Bradley says it's a matter of fairness and justice, and suggests the governing federal Liberals could issue a blanket pardon by January 1, 2019.

"They can do this, and have done this in the past on issues relating to the expunging of records on a mass basis. So, pick a date, let the public know it's going to happen and I think it would be so well received by Canadians who have had great difficulty in their lives for simple possession," he says.  "Whether it be in employment, crossing the border and other issues that arise from it."

Trudeau said Wednesday he's not ready to entertain the idea of pardons yet.

The prime minister also warned that until October 17, the old rules still apply and marijuana is illegal.
