Sarnia Woman Defrauded Of $8K

A Sarnia woman lost $8,000 in a common scam.

Sarnia police Constable John Sottosanti says the victim was contacted Friday.

"The victim received a phone call indicating that the person calling was a lawyer for her son, that had been injured in a motor vehicle collision that was his fault due to impairment, and that he had also injured a youth in the collision," says Sottosanti. "The victim was told that she needed to transfer money, $8,000, in order for her son to receive bail."

The victim was made to believe she was speaking to her son on the phone, but he could not speak clearly due to his injuries.

She wired money to an account and is now working with criminal investigators to try to stop the transfer.

Police urge potential victims of such scams to do their own research by contacting the family member themselves or the police agency with jurisdiction in the area where the incident is to have occurred.

Sarnia police say they can also help deal with another police agency to verify an incident.
