Bookmobile Taken Off The Road

After nearly two decades on the road, the current Bookmobile in Sarnia is staying parked.

Lambton County Council has decided because of constant repairs to the vehicle, they will use a cargo van for the balance of the year.

County Corporate Cultural Officer Andrew Meyer says it's an opportunity for the county to define a new mobile library outreach service and look at other practices across the province.

"What we are looking to do over the next few months is look at how we can enhance that service and ensure that it's meeting community need, delivering more than just books," says Meyer. "Looking at things like perhaps providing library materials to homebound patrons who can't access the library, partnerships with other county divisions to extend the reach of their services and information that they want to get out in the community."

Meyer says the interim cargo van will be making the bookmobile's regularly scheduled stops for the rest of this year.

County council directed that the consideration of a new vehicle purchase be included in 2019 budget deliberations.
