UPDATE: Student-Vote On Par With Local Results

High school students across the province held a mock vote yesterday and students at Sarnia's St. Patrick's High School were on par with the local results.

They gave Bob Bailey the nod with 303 votes while Kathy Alexander game in second with 246.

Province wide, over 2,000 students in 124 electoral districts gave the NDP a majority government with 66 seats while the Conservative got 45 seats, the Liberals 11 and the Green part two seats.

The mock votes on Ontario election day intend to help the students learn about the democratic process and the importance of voting for real when they're of age.

Teacher Blake Morrison says it's a great exercise for the 1,400 students taking part including his Grade 10 civics class.

"Everyone has a direct say in the rules in which they live by. This mock election teaches students how that process works and the importance of it," says Morrison.

Students were given replica ballots of the Sarnia-Lambton riding (pictured below) after they entered the polling station, which doubles as the school's cafeteria.

Morrison says results of the student vote couldn't be announced until Friday.

"Young people tend to vote contrary to what the actual results of the election will be, so it'll be interesting to see the contrast between the outcome of today's actual election and how the students have voted throughout the province," says Morrison.

The school has taken part in mock votes for the past 12 years or so, and will do so again in this October's municipal election.
