We're often told to have a 72-hour kit on hand for emergencies, but have you ever thought to make one for your pet?
The Sarnia and District Humane Society and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (OSPCA) is recommending that we do just that.
Some items to include are food and water for up to three days, a can opener, a leash, plastic bags, and a pet first aid kit.
Agent Becky Knight says the kits may just save your pets life one day.
"If a pet is on a special medication and you have to flee your home, you might forget that," says Knight. "We always say to keep a supply of whatever medication they're on, any pictures in case they have to be kept home and then we get relocation, any special foods or toys and anything that's going to help them when they end up in an arena or wherever the emergency housing is."
Knight says it's also important to include your pets ID tag or microchip number, information about their behaviour, medical concerns, feeding schedule and a list of boarding facilities you've used may also come in handy.
The Humane Society recommends checking the kits twice a year and updating them as necessary with fresh water, food and medication.
