Next Step For Old Sarnia Hospital

It's hoped redevelopment plans for the former Sarnia General Hospital site clear another hurdle Monday.

City council is being asked to approve official plan and zoning bylaw amendments for the site bounded by Mitton St. to the west, George St. to the south, Essex St. on the north side and MacKenzie St. N. to the east.

Mayor Mike Bradley says it appears the collaborative efforts by the developers and the neighbourhood are bringing about a project that the community can support.

"It's good to see that after a lot of neighbourhood consultation there appears to be a common vision of what can go on that site," says Bradley. "Keeping in mind for over 100-years it was an extremely active site with a 24-hour emergency room, for many years the detox facilities in the city were on that property. It's good to see there's residential in there. Would I like to see more residential? Yes. But, at the same time I realize compromises have been made by the neighbourhood and the developers."

GFive Inc. plans call for eight single family residential lots, a crisis care facility, medical and commercial uses to be located on the north side of George St. at MacKenzie St.

Repurposing the former records building, construction of a new medical office building and three single family residential lots is planned for the south side.
