Environment Ministry Probing Suncor Spill

The Ontario Environment Ministry has followed up on a spill from Sarnia's Suncor refinery that happened on Tuesday night.

In an email to Blackburn News, MOE spokesman Gary Wheeler says the company notified them on Wednesday that about 1L of dilute cleaning solution had spilled from a tank near a ditch on their property.

He says Ministry staff attended the property to inspect the area on Wednesday evening.

Suncor conducted sampling and installed temporary catch basins along with pumps, to collect the material and direct it to on-site storage tanks. The company also installed a temporary clay berm in the ditch to make sure that any material that was in the ditch would not move downstream.

Water pumped from the ditch to the storage tanks was sent to the company’s treatment plant.

Ministry staff inspected the ditch and further downstream and did not observe any impacts to surface water, including Talfourd Creek.

Ministry staff followed up with Suncor to gather more details. The company says it will provide the ministry with the results of their sampling, as well as information on the material spilled.
