Bluewater Anglers Salmon Derby Starts Friday

The Bluewater Anglers 42nd annual salmon derby begins at 12:01am on Friday and runs through until Sunday, May 6.

It's a boat and shoreline event, with the boundaries ranging from Fawn Island to Grand Bend, and up the US side to Lexington.

Spokesman Paul Heckley expects to sell about 1,000 tickets for the event, adding the water conditions look good.

"Well, we're always looking for the big salmon that'll break 20 to 22lbs. But, it's been a few years since we've seen one that big. We do have a good chance at getting a lake trout that might break a record," he says. "That was about 25 lbs a few years ago."

Heckley says they're hoping for a better derby than last year. In 2017, only 580 fish were caught, compared to about 1,200 on a typical year.

Over $40,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs.

Those taking part will have the opportunity to use the newly completed boat ramp at Centennial Park.

You can hear daily salmon derby reports throughout the event on 103.9FM and 1070AM CHOK.
