Fire Service Reminds Residents Of Open Burn Rules

The first weekend with weather that actually felt like spring, saw Sarnia Fire and Rescue respond to a handful of open burn complaints.

Public Education Officer Roel Bus says burning is only permitted between the hours of 10am and 11pm.

"It basically comes down to 2 ft by 2 ft in size, dry season firewood is the only thing you can burn, you cannot burn brush or leaves or anything like that," says Bus. "It has to be confined to the pit."

Open fires must be at least 3 m (10 ft) away, in all directions, from adjacent properties, combustible structures and objects.

Those not complying with the bylaw could face a fine under the Provincial Offences Act.

If the fire department responds to a complaint, the person who set the fire could be charged service fees of more than $400 per truck.

More information can be found on the city's website.
