Kathy Alexander Wins NDP Nomination (VIDEO)

Sarnia-Lambton has its NDP candidate for the upcoming provincial election.

Bluewater Health Foundation Executive Director Kathy Alexander won the nomination over veteran candidate Joe Hill on Tuesday night at a meeting attended by party leader Andrea Horwath.

Around 150 people listened to speeches from Horwath, Alexander and Hill before casting their votes at theStory on Christina St.

Shortly after Alexander was announced the winner, she told Blackburn News why she wants to be the next local MPP.

"Over and over again I hear from people that it's really time for a positive change, and I want to be part of making that positive change," she says. "Some people don't trust government. The NDP always wants to help people regardless of what time of year it is and that's why I'm honoured to be the candidate for Sarnia-Lambton."

In the 2014 provincial election, local NDP candidate and current city councillor Brian White finished second in the race with 35% of the vote. Bob Bailey and the Conservative's won with 41%.

Alexander says she'll need to appeal to the whole community for the NDP to win the riding this time around.

"We live in a very large geographic riding so we need to make sure the voices of Sarnia and those who live in Lambton County are met with," she says. "[We'll be] knocking on doors, putting signs up, spreading the word about the impact of this new platform that we'll have and it's really incredible and exciting."

Horwath spoke about the party's five-point campaign platform which was introduced on Monday.

Alexander will be up against incumbent Bob Bailey, Kevin Shaw of the Green Party, Andy Bruziewicz of the Trillium Party, Fanina Kodre of the Century Party and a Liberal Party candidate who has yet to be named in the June 7 election.
