Resting Stars Make Sting Prone To Attack

Owen Sound had 11 players with the luck of the Irish, scoring two points apiece, in a 9-4 St. Patrick's Day romp over the Sting at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

With the third seed locked up for the OHL playoffs, the Sting rested Jordan Kyrou, Adam Ruzicka, Franco Sproviero, Cam Dineen, Connor Schlichting and starting goaltender Justin Fazio.

The Attack needed the two points in their battle with London for home ice advantage in their opening round playoff.

The Sting (46-17-4-1) finish the regular season with franchise records in wins (46) and points (97). The Attack have 84 points and for the moment are in fourth place.

The Attack dominated early, scoring three unanswered goals in the first period. Brady Lyle cracked the scoreboard just 56 seconds into the contest. Brett McKenzie and Nick Suzuki added goals later in the frame to extend the Owen Sound lead to 3-0 after the opening frame.

Sarnia averted the shutout at 2:20 in the middle stanza, with Michael Pezzetta scoring his 23rd goal of the year. Owen Sound responded with three more goals. Daylon Groulx got a goal back for the Attack, followed by back-to-back scoring from Jackson Doherty for a 6-1 Owen Sound lead after 40 minutes of play.

The Sting scored twice early in the third period. Brayden Guy found the net at 2:47, while Ryan McGregor followed soon after. McKenzie got a goal back for Owen Sound on the power play at 12:04, but Guy replied with his second of the game just 41 seconds later. Owen Sound finished the Sting off with goals from Suzuki and Aidan Dudas.

Olivier Lafreniere faced 24 shots in goal for Owen Sound, stopping 20 of them. A busy Aidan Hughes had 47 saves on 56 shots between the pipes for the Sting.

Playoff matchups for both teams are up in the air, pending the outcomes of the Windsor-Saginaw and London-Sault Ste. Marie games Sunday afternoon. -With files from Dave Dentinger
