Hatchery Open House

You have a chance this weekend to see how the Bluewater Anglers raise 120,000 Salmon and Trout that will be released into area waterways.

The organization is hosting their annual open house at their hatchery under the Blue Water Bridge from 10am to 4pm Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18.

Hatchery Manager Jake Van Rooyen says they're able to sustain and preserve the fish stocks thanks to fundraising events such as their recent ice fishing derby.

"It was the best we've ever had," says Van Rooyen. "There were about 310 people on the ice that morning and there were fish caught. Of course, you get that many people out on the ice and it kind of makes the fish a little spooky. But it was really well attended and people had a great time."

Van Rooyen says they try to get kids interested in fishing.

"We have a kid's day at the Hatchery at the end of May and those big fish that are out in the pond, people will be able to see those up close at the open house," he says.

The event runs from 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday.

Their annual shoreline cleanup will be held April 15 with the big Salmon Derby beginning April 27 and Van Rooyen says they're always looking for new members.
