Legionnaires Drop Playoff Opener Versus St. Thomas

The Sarnia Legionnaires trail 1-0 in their first round GOJHL playoff series to the St. Thomas Stars after losing the opener 3-1 on Thursday night at the Brock St. Barn.

After a scoreless opening period, Stars forward Adam Keyes opened the scoring with a powerplay goal 5:44 into the second on a cross crease one timer from former Komoka King Brett Fisher. Legionnaires goalie Will Barber nearly made an incredible diving save on the play, but the puck trickled past him.

Legionnaires captain Sam McCormack tied the game with the man advantage just seven minutes later. Brock Perry cycled the puck to Greg Hay who found McCormack in front of the net. Peter Fleming beat Barber up high with a wrist shot two minutes after that to pull the Stars ahead 2-1.

Fisher sealed the 3-1 victory for St. Thomas with an empty net goal late in the contest. Keyes dished out a pair of assists for a three point night. Barber stopped 16 shots while Stars goalie Jesse Hodgson turned aside 27.

The Legionnaires secured home ice advantage in the series as the fourth seed with 64 regular season points, while the Stars finished fifth with 63 points. The two teams split the six game season series with three wins each.

The game was originally scheduled for 7pm but, a 40 minute power outage delayed puck drop until 8pm.

The Legionnaires will get a chance to tie the series 1-1 as the two teams meet on Friday night in St. Thomas. Game three is Sunday at 7pm at the Sarnia Arena on 103.9FM and 1070AM CHOK.
