Future Of Sombra's Bluewater Ferry Looks Bleak

In a last-ditch attempt to re-open the Bluewater Ferry causeway this spring, Sarnia-Lambton's MP is taking the issue right to the prime minister's office.

MP Marilyn Gladu says the response from federal ministers has not been encouraging.

"At this point, we've reached out to all of the ministers," says Gladu. "The minister of Transportation has come back and said there's no funding in this area. We reached out to the minister of Public Safety, who's in charge of the Canadian border crossing, they've said there's no funding either -- even the emergency management funds that they're supposed to have."

She says the Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard are still checking and the minister of Infrastructure and a US congressman have also been contacted.

Gladu says they're running out of time to meet a January 31 deadline, so she's now contacted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office for help.

"We've escalated it to the prime minister's office, so the prime minister is aware of the need," she says.

Gladu says she's giving the Liberal government every opportunity to do the right thing.

"This is an issue that's important to jobs on both side of the border," she says. "It is really disheartening to find that a government that can find $6-million to build an ice rink on Parliament Hill can't find $2.5-million to keep a border crossing open."

The raised road leading to the dock and Canada Customs office was washed away by St. Clair River ice earlier this month.

Engineers have proposed a $2.5-million rebuild, but work orders would need to be issued immediately for the job to be complete before a fish spawning outage is imposed March 15.
