Controversial Kinsmen Centre Plans Appealed

A decision by Sarnia City Council to develop five new residential lots at the former Kinsmen Centre site is being appealed.

City Director of Planning/Building Alan Shaw says one local citizen has filed an appeal with the Ontario Municipal Board.

"It's up to the city to notify the Ontario Municipal Board," says Shaw. "We've sent that information on to the OMB and they'll be setting a hearing date to overhear and review the decision on rezoning."

In December, council approved in principle draft subdivision plans for the lands at 656 Lakeshore Rd., despite opposition from area neighbours who say the property is part of Baxter Park to the north.

A hearing date has not yet been scheduled, but it's expected to be sometime later this year.

In a 5-4 recorded vote, city councillors Mike Kelch, Anne Marie Gillis, Dave Boushy and Mayor Mike Bradley voted against the recommendation to sell the surplus land.
