Olympic Fundraiser For Figure Skater's Parents

A community effort is underway to raise $25,000 to help send Michael Marinaro's parents to South Korea for the Winter Olympics next month.

The Sarnia native and his partner Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catharines recently qualified for the games after placing third at the Canadian Nationals Figure skating championship.

Jane Ryan, a co-worker of Michael's father Albert, has set up a GoFundMe page to help make the dream a reality.

She says the community is already coming together to help out.

"I know one group in Pt. Edward is going to make something fun and have a fundraiser for it," says Ryan. "People are having little fundraisers and are going to donate the money back in, and I think that's great."

Ryan says Michael's mother Bev recently broke her pelvis, and they're hoping to get a first class plane ticket to make the trip to Pyeongchang more comfortable for her.
