Legionnaires Edge Kings 5-4

Cameron Hough scored twice, and Alec DeKoning dished out three assists, as the Sarnia Legionnaires (21-11-1-5) edged the Komoka Kings (9-23-4-2) 5-4 in GOJHL hockey action Thursday at the Brock St. Barn.

Kings forward Isaac McLean opened the scoring 12:59 into the first period on a backhand shot. Hough tied the contest just 16 seconds later to pull the Legionnaires even 1-1 heading into the second period.

Five minutes into the second, Trevor Bogaert tipped in a Jake Vince point shot to pull the Legionnaires ahead 2-1. Six minutes later, Hough fired home a DeKoning pass from behind the Komoka net to give Sarnia a 3-1 edge. Greg Hay's powerplay goal extended the lead to 4-1, but Komoka's Wes Dobbin scored a powerplay goal of his own to make the score 4-2 after two periods.

Alex Cunningham scored an early third period goal for Komoka to make the score 4-3. Joel Pavey gave the Legionnaires some insurance, snapping in a wrist shot from the slot at 13:15 for a 5-3 lead. The Kings pulled back to within a goal just one minute later on a Joel Mazzilli powerplay goal but that is as close as they would come.

Legionnaires goalie Blair Coffin made 20 saves on 24 shots against, while Avery Hartwick stopped 29 of Sarnia's 34 shots. Sarnia is tied with the LaSalle Vipers for third place in the Western Conference with 48 points. The London Nationals are first with 62 points, while the Leamington Flyers sit in second with 50.

Sarnia is back in action on Sunday night at 7pm in Chatham, and on Wednesday at 7pm in LaSalle. They'll return home on Thursday, January 25 at 7pm against the Strathroy Rockets on CHOK.
