'Community Safety Zones' Hoping To Slow Down Drivers

Sarnia council is being asked to approve a pair of "community safety zones" near Aamjiwnaang first nation.

They would be located on Tashmoo Ave. from Churchill Rd. to LaSalle Line, and on the St. Clair Parkway between LaSalle Line and the main Suncor entrance.

The zones would allow police to impose heavier fines for drivers speeding through those sections of road.

Mayor Mike Bradley says it would be a breakthrough locally.

"I think it's a good direction, it sends a clear message," says Bradley. "I particularly look at River Rd. It has a lot of pedestrians and cyclists and people fishing, yet it can be a high-speed area. Police do enforcement there but this would give them a much better tool to work with public safety."

Council is also being directed to ask city staff to review the requirements for installing temporary speed bumps along Tashmoo Ave.

The only other "Community Safety Zone" locally is on Brigden Rd. between Confederation Line and Marshall Rd.

Council meets at 4pm on Monday.
