Coast Guard Icebreakers Kept Busy Sunday (GALLERY)

Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers continue to work with U.S. counterparts on the Great Lakes to keep commercial vessels moving and reduce the risk of flooding.

Frigid temperatures the last two weeks created ice-choked waterways and ice jams.

The Samuel Risley helped escort the freighters Lee A. Tregurtha and Manitoulin Sunday along the St. Clair River to Lake Huron.

The Risley and Griffon spent the weekend freeing a number of vessels stuck in ice in the river and in western Lake Erie.

The Griffon provided icebreaking assistance to the cargo ship CSL Niagara in Lake Erie's western basin Sunday.

The Niagara is berthing at Sarnia Harbour for the winter.
