Proposed changes to the city's procedural bylaws are being sent to an Ad Hoc Committee for review in January.

Sarnia council decided to table acceptance of the draft Monday.

Some of the recommended changes include:

  • Having a deputy mayor act in the mayor’s absence.
  • Appointing the deputy mayor on a yearly basis, starting the councillor who received the most votes in the last election.
  • Asking a councillor to vacate their office if they are absent for three consecutive months without council approval. However, there is an exemption for parental leave; when it comes to the birth or adoption of a child.
  • Asking the mayor to give 72 hours notice when postponing a meeting.
  • Providing a 30 minute nutrition break if regular meetings go past 6pm.
  • Hiring security for council meetings.
  • And many changes to delegation requests, including when requests may be submitted and who will be allowed to speak.

Just over $175,000 will be spent to do some repairs and replace the roof of the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre.

Sarnia council awarded two contracts Monday night.

The first to Bullock & Sons Roofing for roof replacement, the second to Bill Dokter Masonry for parapet repairs and restoration.

The projects will be paid for from the Lochiel Kiwanis Centre Capital Project Reserve.
