Legionnaires Stall Lincolns, Win 4-2

The Sarnia Legionnaires (13-8-1-2) doubled up the visiting St. Marys Lincolns (6-14-1-2) 4-2 in GOJHL hockey action Thursday night at the Brock St. Barn.

After a scoreless opening period, Sarnia's Joel Pavey tipped in a powerplay goal off of a Tyler Beneteau point shot 7:39 into the second. Just 1:29 later, while shorthanded, Matt Stoia rushed up the ice and drove the net. Ethan Dupont pounced on the loose puck and scored his third of the season to make it 2-0. Dalton Bancroft scored for St. Marys to cut Sarnia's lead to 2-1 after two periods.

Jake Vince added some insurance for the Legionnaires with a goal 7:30 into the third frame on assists from Joel Pavey and Joey Zappa. Lincolns forward Michael Andrews scored to make it interesting but Greg Hay sealed the 4-2 win with an empty net goal.

Legionnaires goalie Will Barber made 23 saves on 25 shots faced, while Tristan Lewis made 33 saves on 36 shots in the Lincolns crease.

The Lincolns' Tyson Kielt hit Legionnaires rookie Nolan DeGurse into the boards from behind with just over two minutes left in the third period. Sarnia forward Josh Barraclough went after Kielt and was handed two minutes for instigating, two minutes for fight aggressor, a five minute major for fighting, and a game misconduct. Kielt received a two minute minor for checking from behind and a game misconduct.

The win moves Sarnia up to fourth place in the Western Conference with 29 points, one ahead of LaSalle and just four behind London and Leamington.

The Legionnaires return to the ice Saturday night in Komoka before hosting the Chatham Maroons on Thursday, November 30 at the Brock St. Barn.
