Possible Changes To Sarnia's Waste Program

Sarnia council will consider amendments to the city's waste and recycling programs when it meets Monday.

The waste limit could be reduced from three to two bags per week for residental properties and from six to four for commercial properties, or kept at the status quo.

Mayor Mike Bradley believes households will be able to adjust.

"If one is separating properly, then one can reduce," says Bradley. "I understand in certain households that isn't as possible as it is in smaller households. But, I think the opportunity is there to continue to decrease the amount of waste going to the landfills."

Bradley says a weekly organic waste collection program is also being looked at. That could be implemented by 2021, depending on if a delivery location and processer can be found.

"I think the public wants organic recycling, but it should be the producers' cost to be responsible because they make the profit," says Bradley. "They should be picking up the costs, not the taxpayers in the community."

It's recommended the city maintain the current recycling and bulk collection programs and adjust prices for the wheel cart program.

Council will also consider whether to keep using clear plastic bags for yard waste, or switch to compostable paper bags.
