Police Sting Targets Human Traffickers

The Sarnia Police Service was one of 46 across the province that conducted human trafficking outreach last week.

Operation Northern Spotlight saw 12 people charged with 21 offences.

Six people, who had been working in the sex trade, including two under the age of 16 were removed from exploitive situations.

Constable John Sottosanti says no charges were laid locally.

"We were able to reach out to several females in the area with the assistance of the RCMP," says Sottosanti. "We spoke to the women in this case and they denied any assistance from police, but we did leave them with information and remind them that we're there to help them. We realize it's difficult for them to speak to us, a lot of time there's the threat of harm, or taking away of pay so they're a lot of times trapped."

Constable Sottosanti says anyone with information about suspected human trafficking in the community should contact the Sarnia Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
