'Extraordinary Gift' For Future Doctors & Nurses

What's being called an "extraordinary gift" to support future doctors and nurses is being celebrated locally.

Sarnia Community Foundation Executive Director Jane Anema says Don Moore of Oil Springs and his family have donated $1-million to set up a scholarship that will run on the interest from their generous endowment.

"It is unusual for us, in that most of our donations are substantially lower," she says. "This is an individual that had been thinking about how to manage his gift back to the community and came to us with an idea."

Anema says Moore really wanted to support medical education in the community.

"People that want to be doctors or nurse practitioners will be able to make application to the foundation to get scholarships on an annual basis," she says.

Anema says Moore's wife had a number of medical issues prior to her death in 2014, and the family is hoping the incentive helps students access the education they need and hopefully return to practice in rural areas.
