New Fire Suppression System Tested

Emergency response crews congregated near the Shell Docks off of the St. Clair Parkway again Tuesday, for day two of a Sarnia Area Disaster Simulation.

Community Awareness and Emergency Response spokesman Dean Edwardson says various responders dealt with a simulated tank fire Monday.

He says they tested a brand new fire suppression system, and pumped water from the St. Clair River.

"Usually we use the municipal supply system, but in this case we used a very robust pump that fed into the monitors with five different lines and we demonstrated that we could throw a lot of water at a particular problem," says Edwardson.

Booms were still deployed on the water at the Shell Docks Tuesday.

"Shell's engaged in their national response, assuming it's a bigger event than just the tank fire, in terms of having to deal with impact to the St. Clair River, containing it, notifying downriver water users and that sort of thing," says Edwardson.

The annual SADS event has been staged at different locations for over 20 years to test responses to an actual emergency.
