Sarnia Students Help Drive Away Hunger

It's not everyday there's a tractor in a city school yard, but there was one Wednesday morning at Errol Rd. Public School in Sarnia.

Members of Farm Credit Canada were picking up food donations from students who participated in their Drive Away Hunger initiative.

Madame Therien's Grade 7 french immersion class led the effort.

Student Noah Kember says they collected 1387 lbs for Sarnia's Inn of the Good Shepherd.

"I think it's awesome that we got so much going around the school, getting cans for people that can't afford it, we can help people around the city," Kember said.

Classmate Arushi Rawit echoed the sentiment.

"We only had a week," said Rawit. "We actually collected way more then we were expecting."

Inn of the Good Shepherd Executive Director Myles Vanni says the donation will really help out.

"People often think when we need 40,000 lbs of food every month, does it matter if I give that little jar of peanut butter or box of cereal?" said Vanni. "But, it's everybody doing that little bit. This class collected almost 1,400 items. That's pretty significant in taking a dent out of that 40,000 lbs. When you see kids involved and they start to learn about the challenges of hunger in our community -- it's so much better for our community when kids realize there's a problem and they hopefully will grow along a pathway of learning and caring in their life."

Drive Away Hunger was started in 2004 when an FCC employee drove an open-cab tractor through parts of Ontario on an eight-day tour -- collecting enough food along the way to provide almost 60,000 meals.
