Push To Rebuild Jackson Pool Continues

Nearly 2,000 people are calling on Sarnia council to rebuild Jackson Pool by next summer.

A petition with over 1,500 hand written signatures and the names of a few hundred more who signed a petition online will be presented to council Monday.

Mayor Mike Bradley says as part of the request, the delegation wants to know when a public consultation meeting will be held.

"The fact is, that council said very clearly they wanted Jackson Pool dealt with outside of this master plan that's being developed in 2018- 2019 about parks and recreation," says Bradley. "That's the resolution of council and they're coming to say, what isn't that proceeding and why isn't that happening."

Sarnia council told staff June 19 to proceed with public consultation for the reopening of Jackson Pool and a multi-purpose gathering place and report back early this fall.

Council decided last April to "temporarily" close the 44' x 82' in-ground pool after staff reported that the pool, built in 1966, was in need of major improvements.

A pool supply and construction company estimated structural repairs, a pool liner replacement, accessibility upgrades and asbestos remediation to cost over $580,000.

The figure provided this year was significantly higher than an estimate of $167,000 made in 2016.
