Legionnaires Ground Rockets 5-1

Jon Sanderson scored twice and added an assist, to power the Sarnia Legionnaires (3-4-1-1) to a 5-1 win over the visiting Strathroy Rockets (3-3-0-0) in GOJHL hockey action Thursday night.

The Legionnaires took an early 1-0 lead on rookie Greg Hay's second goal of the season. Sanderson scored to make it a 2-0 game 10:31 into the frame, tapping in a wrap around attempt from Joel Pavey.

Strathroy's Liam Whittaker made it a 2-1 game just nine seconds later. Brock Perry extended the lead to 3-1 with 23 seconds remaining in the first period on assists from Sanderson and Pavey.

Third period markers off the sticks of Josh Barraclough and Jon Sanderson sealed the win for Sarnia.

Sanderson says it felt great to get the win. "All of the boys were going tonight, we were having fun and just doing the little things to get the win tonight," says Sanderson. "It feels good to get the win, definitely our turning point to start to get going here."

Legionnaires goalie Will Barber made 24 saves on 25 shots against, while Strathroy netminder Joshua Diamond allowed five goals on 28 shots.

Legionnaires Head Coach Mark Davis says it was a full team effort. "We played three solid periods," says Davis. "From the goaltender all the way out, I thought Barber played a really solid game. The defence played solid, all of the lines were clicking and we got scoring from guys that should be scoring."

With the pair of assists, Joel Pavey is now tied for the GOJHL lead with 11. He's also tied for eighth in points with 12.

The Legionnaires return to action Wednesday, October 4 in London and are at home for a rematch with the Rockets the following night at 7pm at the Brock St. Barn on CHOK.
