Warning Issued About Aging City Infrastructure

Residents are being warned of more frequent watermain breaks in the future, similar to what occurred on Colborne Rd. Tuesday north of the Hwy. 402 overpass.

A 20 inch main distribution line burst, flooding the busy north-south roadway and buckling asphalt.

Sarnia's Acting Director of Engineering Mike Berkvens says this was the second break in the area in the last few months.

"The first break was due largely to a surge in pressure," says Berkvens. "This one was a pipe failure. We will be seeing more watermain breaks because of the age of our infrastructure."

A report two years ago found it would cost $43.7-million to replace watermains most in danger of immediate failure.

Berkvens says they managed to patch up Colborne Rd. but it will be properly resurfaced once a contractor is hired.
