Federal Funds Sought For VPP Improvement Study

Petrolia town council thinks it could be time to look at an expansion and renovations at Victoria Hall.

Director of Cultural Services Richard Poore will apply for a federal grant to hire a consultant to look into what could be done to improve the National Heritage site.

"We're trying to provide all of the auxiliary uses for the theatre, things such as set production and rehearsal space and so on, all under one roof," says Poore. "We need to find out how we can re-imagine Victoria Hall as we go forward. If we receive federal funding the consultant can explore the uses of Victoria Hall, looking at some key areas. How can we improve accessibility, enhance the functionality of the facility for both the theatre and municipal purposes and the potential for creating a permanent gallery space."

Town council says it will pick up half of the $50,000 cost for a consultants report. It's hoped a federal government Cultural Spaces Fund will pay for the other half.

Saturday, September 23 marks the 25th anniversary of the re-opening of Victoria Hall after it was severely damaged by a fire in 1989.

The building, built in 1889, was designated a National Heritage Site in 1975.
