Volunteers Save SMAA Baseball

Thanks to a spike in volunteers, Sarnia Minor Athletic Association (SMAA) says they will be able to continue their baseball program next season.

In operation since 1947, the program was at risk of folding if they didn't get some much needed help. Past Chair Steve Hamilton says they had 38 people sign up during Monday's volunteer information meeting, a significant increase from the 14 they had this past summer.

After previous attempts to attract more volunteers were unsuccessful, he was thrilled to see the interest when they were most desperate.

"We really needed the volunteers to show up and they did, there was a lot of people who were interested in making sure SMAA baseball continued," syas Hamilton. "We're now comfortable that we will have the people in place the have the 2018 season.

SMAA Baseball elected five new executives during Monday's meeting, with David Hogan (Chair), Jay Peckham (First vice Chair), Simon Will (Second Vice Chair), Ron Smith (Treasurer) and Sandra Kameka (Secretary) leading the group of volunteers.

Hamilton says they will set the other volunteer duties during their October 10 meeting, which is open to the public. He expects they will likely need a couple more volunteers to help fill out the roster.

SMAA baseball had over 650 kids registered this summer.
