Sustaining Fish Stocks In Lake Huron

The reason this area is so good for fishing is pretty simple -- the Bluewater Anglers Hatchery.

Manager Jake Van Rooyen says they'll start to release thousands of fish around mid-October.

"We have about 20,000 brown trout that are just about ready to go," says Van Rooyen. "These are all 20 gram fish or better. We have about 2,500 rainbows that we held over from spring and these weigh about 30-40 grams. We're releasing bigger fish this fall and keeping the smaller ones to protect them from predators."

Bluewater Anglers hope to get about 110,000 salmon eggs from the Owen Sound area this fall and release about 90,000 into area waterways next spring.

The organization is a group of people dedicated to sustaining and preserving the fish stocks in lower Lake Huron.
