Lambton College Student Named Award Finalist

An innovative Lambton College student is in the running for a $15,000 prize.

International student Gaurav Sareen has designed a sensor-based walking stick for the visually and hearing impaired.

The concept, dubbed as "eyes for the blind and ears for the deaf" is one of ten finalists in the William G. Davis Innovation Fund launched earlier this year in honour of the Ontario College's 50th Anniversary celebration.

The multipurpose aid has a unique vibration mechanism that increases when it detects nearby obstacles, a GPS and alert system that send a message to four saved contracts in the case of an emergency, and a sensor that detects the presence of water.

The province-wide contest is named after former premier Bill Davis who was education minister from 1962 to 1971 and brought in the legislation that established the college system.

The community can vote for their favourite finalist online until November 5.
