Volunteers Desperately Needed To Save SMAA Season

Sarnia Minor Athletic Association's (SMAA) baseball program may have seen an increase in registration, but the same can't be said for volunteers.

They had about 650 kids registered in the program last year, up from about 500 kids two years ago. SMAA Chairperson Steve Hamilton says the association, which first began in 1947, wont be able to continue unless they get more volunteers.

Despite more kids playing, Hamilton says they only had 14 volunteers this past summer, a far cry from the 25-30 that is needed to run the program efficiently.

This prompted them to put out a plea for volunteers on facebook.

"A lot of people wanted some more information before committing to anything so I figured we'd have an information session so I could go through the different positions and tasks that need to be done, people will have a good idea of what to expect after Monday's meeting."

Hamilton says the time commitment varies depending on the position, he says all that will be explained further during the meeting.

He says SMAA has five elected positions, and are also looking for people to help with uniforms, equipment, registration, scheduling, photography and other jobs that will help SMAA continue operations.

The information session gets underway at 7pm Monday night at the Chayter building at the east side of Germain Park.
